High-Performance Buildings – The Varied Paths to Net-Zero
Wednesday, October 10th at 1:00-2:30pm
Last year, the Province of British Columbia adopted the new BC Energy Step Code to help unify local government policy and bylaws with the ultimate goal of achieving highly energy-efficient buildings throughout the Province. The BC Energy Step Code is a unified code with a primary goal of making all new construction net-zero energy ready by the year 2032.
The BC Energy Step Code relies on a performance approach to compliance. The performance approach establishes a desired outcome and offers flexibility to the building team to decide how it will achieve the outcome. Instead of focusing on specific components within a building, building professionals need to consider the building as a system, ensuring each component will work together to achieve a high-performance building.
While the new performance approach to compliance establishes a desired outcome (high-performance), it does not provide a clear path to achieve this goal. The building team has the flexibility to decide how it will achieve the performance required to comply with each step – and eventually net-zero – of the BC Energy Step Code . The various verification programs, or branded building standards, are one option the building team can select.
In this 1-hour seminar, Terry Bergen, Principal at Read Jones Christoffersen Ltd., will discuss the various verification programs building teams can adopt to achieve code-mandated net-zero energy objectives for their projects.
