Scandinavian Modern

Located in British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley, this Scandinavian-inspired modern home is nestled into its landscape with uninterrupted views of Okanagan Lake. Designed with intention by NIDO Design and carefully built by Red Stag Contracting, the highly energy-efficient ranch-style home with an open concept living features many high-performance building materials and technologies.

The high-performance custom home exceeded the requirements for Step 4 of the BC Energy Step Code with a final blower door test result of 1.0 ACH50.  The home includes an ICF foundation with an additional 2-5/8″ EPS on either side and 2″ concrete faced EPS insulation panel on the exterior; 2×12 framed walls with densepack cellulose insulation for an effective insulating value of R34; weather resistant barrier Rothoblaas Traspir 115 with rainscreen; triple glazed Innotech windows and doors; and 116% efficient Minotair CERV. The home is powered solely by electricity and has a 6.7 kw/h solar system that accounts for up to 75% of the home’s yearly usage.

During construction in early 2021, the project was featured on The Build Show Network‘s Build Original Series: High-Performance in Canada. The architectural designer, Brett Sichello, and builder, Andrew Spear, discussed the strategies and materials used to create a comfortable and durable home.
