New NAFS and Energy Code Requirements for Windows, Doors & Skylights
Friday, May 13 from 9:30-11:00 am

Alberta building professionals are still coming to grips with the many changes introduced in the 2014 Alberta Building Code. These changes to the building code have significantly impacted how building professionals are specifying windows, doors and skylights in other provinces.

Innotech is pleased to offer the industry an educational seminar covering both NAFS and energy performance requirements that apply to windows, doors and skylights. The seminar will address two important topics related to the performance of windows, doors and skylights under the 2014 Alberta Building Code: Air-Water-Structural performance, and Energy performance. Both large building (Part 5) and small building (Part 9) requirements will be presented.

Topic 1: NAFS in Part 5 and Part 9

The 2014 Alberta Building Code introduced major changes to how windows, doors and skylights are tested for Part 5 air-water-structural performance. However these requirements do not apply to all fenestration products. This session will address products within and outside the scope of the North American Fenestration Standard, and will discuss how these are handled under Part 5 and Part 9.

Topic 2: New Energy Performance Requirements for Fenestration

The 2014 Alberta Building Code also introduced new energy performance requirements for fenestration. Large buildings will need to be designed to the 2011 National Energy Code, while small buildings will need to comply with subsection 9.36. This session will introduce participants to the energy performance requirements for windows and doors in Alberta.

The North American Fenestration Standard

The North American Fenestration Standard/Specification (NAFS) is an improved standard for testing, rating and labeling of windows, doors and skylights for residential and commercial buildings in both Canada and the United States.

The standard’s official name is AAMA/WDMA/CSA 101/I.S.2/A440, “NAFS – North American Fenestration Standard/Specification for Windows, Doors and Skylights”. In Canada, there is also an additional Canadian Supplement. The fenestration industry refers to the standard as NAFS.

NAFS has had a transformative impact on the fenestration industry. Architects and building designers need to change their product selection and specification habits, while builders need to procure products that are properly tested to the new fenestration code and correctly rated for the building location. To learn more about NAFS, check out the list of topics covered on the NAFS in Canada blog written by Al Jaugelis.
