Innotech is a proud sponsor of Team Canada's entry into the 2011 Solar Decathlon, a semi-annual competition held by the US Department Energy that challenges students from around the world to design, build, and operate solar powered homes. Entrants are judged on energy efficiency, design appeal, and affordability, and while Canada's TRTL concept didn't win the competition, the team placed a very respectable 10th amidst a field of 20.

But, recently the team was recognized with an award closer to home.

But recently the Team was recognized with an award closer to home. At the 21st annual Alberta Emerald Foundation Awards, Team Canada received a coveted Emerald in the category of "Education: School or Classroom", awarded to Alberta classrooms, schools or formal educational curricula and programs that have gone beyond normal practices to show leadership and creativity in educating students about environmental matters.

“I am extremely proud of the Team for achieving this prestigious recognition of their work in the Solar Decathlon competition,” says Loraine Fowlow, Faculty Lead for the project. “These students are fantastic ambassadors for the University, showcasing their talents in this highly demanding, international competition. Their success with this project highlights the value that the University of Calgary places on experiential learning and applied research.”

Innotech would like to pass our congratulations onto the entire TRTL team, and we are extremely proud to see this innovative and exciting learning happening in Canada.

The American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA) recently published an articled entitled "High Condensation Resistance of Vinyl Meets Green, Health Care Needs". The article takes a look at the benefits of high performance vinyl windows for use in health care facilities:

"In the health care world in particular, green building practices are expanding design visions to emphasize beneficial daylighting, energy efficiency and other key green criteria, while accomplishing the latest sector-specific missions of reducing health care errors; discouraging the spread of infectious agents; improving sound attenuation; increasing patient well-being and enhancing physical security. High-efficiency vinyl windows with high CRF values should be of particular interest to hospitals and other medical facilities because moisture provides fertile ground for growth of potentially dangerous molds and bacteria, and can compromise sensitive diagnostic equipment. Smooth, non-porous surfaces also discourage the collection of dust and the spread of infection and are easy to clean. Windows with vinyl frames and integral blinds, sealed against moisture, dust and mold within insulating glass units, are a good option.

For all these reasons, the green movement, although initially virulently anti-vinyl, is beginning to take a second look at vinyl products, much as occurred in Europe more than a decade ago."

Innotech has new product listings on the Built Green Canada website based on our new 2010 ENERGY STAR® ratings.

Two years ago, Innotech joined Built Green Canada, an Alberta-based green building program originally created by the Canadian Home Builders Association. Built Green recognizes four levels of achievement: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. Builders accumulate points from a checklist of green building options and must also achieve specified EnerGuide ratings for overall energy efficiency.

Built Green has an online catalog of products that meet their criteria for a green home, and Innotech has several new product listings:

+ Innotech Tilt + Turn / Picture Windows
