NAFS Seminar in Calgary

New Code Requirements for Windows and Doors in Custom Homes

The transition period to implement the new Alberta Building Code ends on November 1, 2015. At this time, building professionals will be required to comply to the North American Fenestration Standard (NAFS) as outlined in the 2010 National Building Code.

In addition, new energy efficiency requirements are soon (Fall 2015 and Fall 2016) to be mandated in the Alberta Building Code, as set forth by the National Energy Code of Canada and Section 9.36 of the Alberta Building Code. These changes to the building code have already significantly impacted how building professionals are specifying windows, doors and skylights in other provinces.

Innotech is pleased to offer Alberta building professionals an educational seminar entitled “New Code Requirements for Windows and Doors in Custom Homes”. Presented by Fenestration Specialist Al Jaugelis of RDH Building Engineering, the 90-minute seminar will address the requirements outlined by the North American Fenestration Standard (NAFS), the Alberta Building Code and the new energy performance requirements for designing, specifying and selecting windows and doors for custom homes.

About Al Jaugelis

Al Jaugelis is a fenestration specialist with RDH Building Engineering Ltd. Specializing in both air-water-structural and energy performance issues, Al has a keen understanding of fenestration industry standards, testing, and certification programs in both Canada and the US. Al is currently an associate member of the CSA A440 Committee, an active member of the Fenestration Canada Technical Committee, the NRCan Energy Efficient Fenestration Steering Committee, and is a technical consultant member of the American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA). He writes on window and door issues on the NAFS in Canada blog.

The North American Fenestration Standard

The North American Fenestration Standard/Specification (NAFS) is an improved standard for testing, rating and labeling of windows, doors and skylights for residential and commercial buildings in both Canada and the United States.

The standard’s official name is AAMA/WDMA/CSA 101/I.S.2/A440, “NAFS – North American Fenestration Standard/Specification for Windows, Doors and Skylights”. In Canada, there is also an additional Canadian Supplement. The fenestration industry refers to the standard as NAFS.

NAFS has had a transformative impact on the fenestration industry. Architects and building designers need to change their product selection and specification habits, while builders need to procure products that are properly tested to the new fenestration code and correctly rated for the building location. To learn more about NAFS, click here.
